The S/U option is open from 9am, 22 December 2009 to 11.59pm, 24 December 2009.

Transport will be provided for team members to check their examination results, as well as declare their S/U options in Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang.

Team members are reminded to bring along your UserID and PIN number with them if they wish to utilise this option.

The South Coast of Singapore, with its glowing dusk scenery and vibrant late night entertainment, will set the backdrop for Project Hak’s cycling expedition this December.

Team members plan to cycle along Singapore’s most scenic nightscape as part of the Bonding Camp held from 5 to 6 December 2009.

While the actual route is still under wraps, rest stops will include the Esplanade, famous eating stops like Lau Pa Sat, as well as the sparkling lights of Mount Faber.

Jeremy Mok, organiser of the Night Cycling expedition, said: “This is a good chance for those who have not seen the really late night scene of Singapore.”

The welfare and experience of the team are also taken into account. The organisers are planning for contingency plans and safety procedures.

“Some of the members might not have that much experience in cycling yet; I will shorten the route and avoid any slopes. Safety is very important, especially for those who have not tried road cycling. We need to know what to do if we split up at traffic junctions,” Jeremy continued.

Tiring as it may sound, team members are looking forward to the cycling expedition.

Tan Li Jie, Team Member, said: “I think this is a fantastic opportunity for the team to bond because they are cycling together. It will be a fun activity that everyone can enjoy.”

Team Leader Alice Guo is also optimistic. She said: “It seems like everyone likes the plan. It will be a platform for members to know more about each other. People who have never done night cycling before will appreciate the effort the team has put in.”

Will we still see this in the future?

A growing number of foreign visitors have been taking a toll on the Laotian landscape since the Socialist Republic first opened up to tourism 2 decades ago.

But fear not, rural Laotians are set to receive a lesson on environmental awareness very soon.

21 undergraduates from the NUS Rotaract Club are headed for Vang Vien, Laos, this December as part of Project “Hak”, an overseas youth expedition project. They aim to help villagers become more aware of what is happening to their surroundings.

Team leader Alice Guo said, “What’s different about our project is sustainability. We are going to teach the villagers how to preserve the environment, instead of just building houses for them.”

“Hak” means “ love” in the Laotian language. But it is not just love for the environment that the team wants to show to the Laotians, it is also the importance of education. Team members will help refurbish a school and conduct lessons for the local school children.

The team plans to expose Laotians to basic environmental concepts, conduct basic English lessons, as well as immerse project members in Laotian culture.

The undergraduates come from all corners of NUS, bringing with them a range of skills that will be useful for the project. Amongst them is a professional photographer, 2 first-aiders and numerous social workers.

Jessica Ker, Team Leader, was enthusiastic about the response so far. She said, “Our progress was slow at first, but it has been picking up lately as the group members each found his or her own niche, greatly aiding the project in different aspects. I’m confident the trip will be a success.”

However, the trip is still some time away and the focus is on raising more funds.

The fundraising program has been a notable success so far, with the team working with companies for sponsorship opportunities and fundraising events over the past 2 months.

Project HAK is underway and we are on a mission to Laos to do all we can to spread love, joy and happiness!!!
